Pakistan Health Research Council (PHRC)

Research Grants


The Pakistan Health Research Council (PMRC) is an public sector autonomous organization under the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination. The Council funds projects submitted on subjects related to human health and disease, which are accepted from both public and private sector. The key objective is to generate local knowledge and evidence on health issues to guide health policy makers.

Only health-related research proposals meeting the following criteria are eligible;



High Priority Areas of Research

This includes following priority areas of health as follow.


A. Communicable Diseases,

This list has been taken from the Field Epidemiology and Lab Training Program (FELTP), Pakistan which has recently prioritized the diseases by consensus workshop.


  1. Tuberculosis
  2. Measles
  3. Hemorrhagic fevers (Including CCHF)
  4. Hepatitis B and C
  5. Malaria
  6. Polio and acute flaccid paralysis (AFP)
  7. Dengue
  8. Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI)
  9. Cholera
  10. Diarrhea outbreaks


B. Non communicable Diseases (NCDs)


For NCDs, following diseases are included


  1. Diabetes
  2. Hypertension
  3. Mental health
  4. Cancers
  5. Tobacco


C. National programs like, EPI, MNCH, HIV/AIDS and Family planning etc


The maximum Limit for this Grant is  0.5 million (PKR) and projects can be submitted throughout the year.


Note: For PHRC Centers, project of HPA areas can be replicated at different centers to generate provincial/national level data

Routine Research Grant

The proposal for routine research grants should deal with a health problem of national importance / related to public health with following themes/areas


  • Improving patient management
  • New use of device or new test
  • Cost effective approach


The maximum limit for this Grant is 0.3 Million (PKR) and projects  are accepted throughout the year.


S J Zuberi Grant

This grant is awarded to honor Dr. S J Zuberi (Late) in recognition of her services for liver diseases. Each year one research project is funded under this grant.

The theme is chosen from one of the priority areas for health research in Gastroenterology & Hepatology by the PHRC Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). The themes for year 2017 are;


  1. Surgical causes of jaundice in neonates.
  2. Prevention of Hepatitis at community level.

The maximum limit for the grant is 0.5 Million (PKR).


Evaluation Criteria

All projects are peer reviewed by the expert and if recommended, presented to PHRC Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for final evaluation and approval for funding. The TAC meeting is held twice in a year (i.e. 1st and 2nd half of the year) depending upon the number of approved projects to be presented in the meeting.
